- Fewer chemicals: Requires minimal or no pesticides, fertilizers, or toxic dyes

Plant-Based Natural Fibers
Organic Cotton
The Good: Cotton is breathable, comfortable, and biodegradable. Organic cotton eliminates synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, promoting healthier soil and reducing pollution. It’s also softer – organic cotton fibers feel smoother against your skin.
The Reality: Conventional cotton is one of the thirstiest crops, requiring enormous amounts of water and chemicals . Organic cotton still needs significant water, but its overall impact is much lower.

Recycled Cotton
The Good: Made from post-industrial and post-consumer cotton waste, recycled cotton reduces water and energy consumption and keeps clothes out of landfills . It’s arguably the most responsible cotton option.
The Challenge: It’s less available than organic cotton due to limitations in textile-to-textile recycling supply chains.
Emission Factor: Recycled cotton produces just 0.34 kg CO₂e/kg – far lower than both conventional and organic.
Hemp
The Good: Hemp is the sustainability superstar. It requires very little water, no pesticides, and naturally fertilizes the soil it grows in. It grows quickly (up to 3 meters in about 3 months) and is naturally pest-resistant . Hemp fabric is strong, durable, breathable, and gets softer with every wash.
The Reality: Hemp can feel coarser than cotton initially – its surface friction is 0.45 vs. 0.2-0.3 for smoother fabrics . Not all hemp is organic, so look for certified options.
Performance: Hemp excels in insulation (thermal resistance 22.0 × 10⁻³ m²·K/W), making it ideal for cooler weather.
Best For: Jackets, trousers, bags, durable everyday wear.
Linen
The Good: Linen comes from the fast-growing flax plant, which requires minimal water and pesticides and grows even in poor-quality soil. Every part of the plant is used, so nothing is wasted. Linen is highly breathable, hypoallergenic, biodegradable, and feels great in warm climates.
The Reality: To get pure white linen, it often undergoes heavy bleaching. Unbleached linen (beige or grey) is more environmentally friendly. It wrinkles easily, though some of us consider that part of its charm.

Bamboo
The Good: Bamboo is breathable, moisture-wicking, and exceptionally cooling. It has high thermal conductivity (0.049 W/m·K) and air permeability (695 mm/s), making it ideal for warm weather . It absorbs moisture extremely well (13.0% moisture regain).
The Reality: While bamboo grows quickly and sustainably, processing it into fabric often involves chemical-intensive methods. Look for mechanically processed bamboo or Lyocell bamboo (closed-loop processing) rather than generic “bamboo rayon.”
Biodegradability: Bamboo biodegrades in just 1-2 years, compared to 20-200 years for synthetics.
Best For: Activewear, breathable summer clothing, underwear.
Man-Made Cellulosic Fibers (MMCF)
TENCEL Lyocell
The Good: TENCEL Lyocell is made from responsibly sourced wood pulp using a closed-loop system where the solvent is recycled, reducing dangerous waste . It’s more absorbent than cotton, requires less energy and water to produce, and offers smooth, silky comfort (surface friction 0.2 – 0.3) . It has moisture-wicking and antibacterial properties .
The Reality: It’s a man-made fiber, not “natural” in the traditional sense. But it’s processed far more responsibly than rayon or viscose.
Emission Factor: TENCEL Lyocell produces 2.14 kg CO₂e/kg, compared to 6.73 kg for conventional lyocell.

LENZING ECOVERO
The Good: This is a more sustainable viscose variant. It has lower environmental impact than conventional viscose.
Emission Factor: ECOVERO produces 3.27 kg CO₂e/kg, while conventional viscose produces 8.36 kg.

Recycled Synthetics
Recycled Polyester
The Good: Recycled polyester (like REPREVE) is made from post-consumer plastic bottles and industrial waste. It keeps plastics out of landfills and oceans while offering the same performance as virgin polyester.
The Reality: It’s still plastic. It still sheds microfibers when washed. And despite being recycled, it’s not biodegradable.
